Your baby’s first year is full of incredible growth, tiny milestones, and heart-melting moments—and somehow, it all leads up to that magical first birthday. If you’re thinking about a cake smash or first birthday session to celebrate, you’re in the right place. These sessions are joyful, a little messy, and so full of personality—and I’m here to make the process as easy (and fun!) as possible. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a sweet, stress-free first birthday photo session.

When Should We Book?

I recommend scheduling your baby’s first birthday session when your little one is around 10.5 to 11.5 months old. That gives us time to get your final images back before their actual birthday—perfect for party invitations, decorations, or simply celebrating the milestone right on time.

Spots fill quickly, so it’s never too early to reach out—especially if you want a certain theme or specific date!

What’s Included in a First Birthday Session?

Each session includes:

  • Classic portraits of your baby (we start with these while they’re fresh and curious)
  • The cake smash (this is where the fun—and frosting—happens!)
  • An optional mini splash/tub cleanup at the end (adorable and practical)

We keep everything light, neutral, and timeless here in the studio so your baby is always the focus. I’ll style the session to match your preferences, and you’ll have access to our curated collection of props and outfits.

What Should We Bring?

Good news: You really don’t need much! I have everything set up and ready when you arrive. You’ll want to bring:

  • A simple outfit for baby (or let me know if you’d like to use one of ours!)
  • A small towel if we’re doing the tub splash at the end
  • Any snacks or toys that help comfort baby
  • A drink (cake can be sticky work!)

Optional: a change of clothes for you in case things get extra messy!

Let’s Talk About Cake

I recommend and use a simple, 4–6 inch cake in light colors—vanilla or pastel tones photograph beautifully. The cake is included in your session- we use Honey Bee Bakery for the most beautiful, tasty cakes around!

You’re welcome to bring your own cake or use one of my preferred local bakers. Just let me know if your baby has any allergies so we can plan accordingly.

Tips for a Smooth Session

Here’s how to help your little one shine:

  • Schedule around naps so your baby is rested and happy.
  • Feed them lightly beforehand—enough to be content, but still interested in cake!
  • Keep the mood light—not every baby “smashes” the cake, and that’s okay. Whether they dive in or gently poke, we’ll capture their unique personality.
  • Let go of expectations. The most magical moments happen when we let baby lead.

Can Parents or Siblings Join?

Absolutely! While the focus is on your little one, I always encourage a quick family photo or parent snuggle at the start. Your baby will love looking back one day and seeing you right there, holding them close.

After the Session

Your soft proof gallery will be ready to view within a few days. From there, you’ll choose your favorite images, and I’ll help you turn them into artwork, albums, or party-ready prints. (Trust me—you’re going to want these photos everywhere!)

Why These Photos Matter

The first year is a whirlwind. One moment you’re holding a newborn, and the next they’re smashing cake with frosting in their eyelashes and belly laughs echoing through the room.

These sessions aren’t just about the cake—they’re about celebrating who your baby is at this moment, and how far you’ve all come as a family.
