When to Schedule Maternity Photos (and Why 28–34 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot)

Pregnancy has a way of moving both slowly and too fast at the same time. One minute you’re staring at two pink lines, and the next you’re packing a hospital bag and wondering how you got here so quickly. Somewhere in between, many moms start wondering when to schedule maternity photos — and how to choose a time that feels comfortable, meaningful, and truly reflective of this season.

If you’ve been wondering when the best time for a maternity session is, you’re not alone. After photographing dozens of expecting moms, I can confidently say that 28–34 weeks is the sweet spot — and here’s why.

Why Timing Matters for Maternity Photos

Maternity photos aren’t just about documenting a baby bump — they’re about how you feel during this season.

The timing of your session affects:

  • Your comfort level
  • How defined your bump looks
  • Your energy and mobility
  • How relaxed and confident you feel in front of the camera

Choosing the right window helps ensure your experience — and your images — reflect the beauty of this season without unnecessary stress.

The Sweet Spot: 28–34 Weeks Pregnant

1. Your Bump Is Beautifully Defined

By 28 weeks, your belly has that unmistakable, rounded shape that photographs so well. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the third trimester begins at 28 weeks of pregnancy — a stage when your body has often adjusted to pregnancy while your baby’s growth becomes more visible and defined. Clothing drapes naturally, hands fall instinctively to your bump, and your pregnancy is clearly visible without feeling exaggerated.

2. You’re Typically More Comfortable

Most moms still feel relatively mobile and energetic during this window. You can move easily, change outfits comfortably, and enjoy the session without feeling rushed or physically exhausted.

By the later weeks of pregnancy, swelling, back discomfort, and fatigue often become more noticeable — and that can take away from the experience.

3. Less Stress, More Peace of Mind

Scheduling your session before 35 weeks gives you a cushion in case baby decides to arrive early. It also keeps maternity photos from feeling like one more thing on your to-do list during the final stretch of pregnancy.

This season is already full of appointments — your photo session should feel like a pause, not a pressure.

What Happens If You Schedule Too Early?

Before 26–27 weeks, many moms feel like their bump isn’t quite “there” yet. While every body is different, earlier sessions can sometimes look more like lifestyle portraits during pregnancy rather than clearly maternity-focused images.

If celebrating your bump is important to you, waiting until that 28-week mark makes a big difference.

What About Scheduling Later Than 34 Weeks?

While it’s still possible to photograph maternity sessions later in pregnancy, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Increased swelling can affect how hands, arms, and ankles photograph
  • Movement may be more limited
  • Comfort becomes less predictable
  • There’s a higher chance baby may arrive early

For these reasons, I recommend no later than 34 weeks whenever possible.

Studio vs. Outdoor Sessions: Does Timing Change?

Not significantly — but studio sessions are especially forgiving during this window.

At my Medina studio, maternity sessions are:

  • Calm and unhurried
  • Temperature controlled
  • Designed with neutral, flattering light
  • Styled with simple, timeless wardrobe options

This allows you to focus on being present rather than worrying about weather, walking distances, or feeling overexposed.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Session?

Because maternity sessions are limited each month, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to reserve your spot — even though your session will take place later.

This ensures:

  • Availability during your ideal window
  • Time to plan wardrobe and styling
  • A relaxed, intentional experience

A Gentle Reminder

You don’t need to look a certain way.
You don’t need to feel “perfect.”
You don’t need to wait until everything feels ready.

This season is worthy of being remembered — just as you are.
