There are sessions that feel like just another beautiful day at the studio, and then there are sessions that feel like coming home. This was one of those.
I first met this mama when I photographed her maternity session — that golden, expectant quiet before everything changes. Then I had the privilege of welcoming her oldest into the world through my lens, documenting those very first days of her life as a big sister-to-be. And now, a few years later, here we all were again. New baby. Same love. More of it.
When a family trusts you not once, but three times, it means everything. You know their style. You know what makes them laugh. You know mom prefers simple and soft, and that dad will give you the look when you ask him to do something cheesy. I treasure these repeat families more than I can say.
I’m a firm believer that the most meaningful images in a newborn gallery aren’t always the ones of baby alone — they’re the ones that show scale. A dad’s large hand cradling a head no bigger than his palm. A mama’s fingers gently resting on a tiny back. These photos remind you, years from now, just how impossibly small they once were.
We started with baby on his own — and what a personality this little guy had from the very first minute. Wide awake and already opinionated, those big dark eyes were taking everything in. I love when newborns are alert like this.
For his solo portraits, I kept things rooted in neutrals: creamy whites, soft sage, warm beige tones that let him be the star. But I always love to sneak in a pop of color — a dusty blue bucket, a muted periwinkle flokati — just enough to give the gallery some dimension without pulling attention away from that tiny face.
One of my absolute favorite poses for baby boys is nestled into a little bowl or bucket, curled up like they still remember being small. He looked completely at peace, and I may have melted a little behind the camera.
We made sure to weave those connection images throughout — dad gazing down at his son in the soft window light, mom nose-to-nose with her newborn in that silhouette I never get tired of capturing, and a sweet detail shot of ten perfect little toes. Those feet. I will never stop photographing newborn feet.
Watching an older sibling meet their baby brother or sister in session is one of the greatest gifts of this job. She was so gentle with him, so proud. The way she leaned down and pressed her cheek to his, the way she looked at the camera with that enormous smile while he slept peacefully beside her — I could have photographed them for hours.
Getting a full family of four to all look their best at the same time, with a newborn in the mix, is always a little bit of a dance. But this family was a dream. We got dad solo, mom and dad together, big sister showing off her baby brother, and the whole crew — everyone smiling, everyone present. That last full-family frame is one I know they’ll hang on their wall.
These are the sessions are the reason I continue to do this. Watching a family grow. Holding space for the chaos and the tenderness and the tired and the full hearts. Thank you for letting me be part of your story — again.
